Podcast Recap: Beyond the Platform

This is Tony Montgomery's podcast. Yes.. He is my boyfriend. And that is definitely why I am doing a recap on his podcast first. But I am also doing this recap because I think that he has some of the best interviews. He talks to some of the best in the industry. You will hear real life stories. You will learn some tips and tricks from amazing athletes, coaches, and people.

Episode 2: Jordan Shallow

Jordan goes over what he likes to do as a "warm-up." I put warm-up in quotations because he says he doesn't like to separate warming up and working out. He see it all as one thing.

He likes to do some static stretching to loosen up the tight body (from sitting at a desk or in traffic). The he likes to do some corrective/activation (dynamic) exercises. Get the body ready to work. And get weaker/under-active muscle "awake" and working. In between all this, Jordan like to work in his main movement (ie. squats, bench, or dead). This is why he views the warming up process as part of the work out.

Episode 3: Paul Oneid

Paul talks about training programming. "Method to the madness."

He chooses variations of the main movements to train in his off season. And he chooses those exercises based on his weaknesses. He also keeps his other lifts in mind when doing this.

He also talks about performing each set the same... Meaning do you warm-up sets like your 1RM.

You want to do this simply because practice makes perfect!

Tony and Paul also rant about not maxing out in the gym! You don't have to "see where you're at." You can see where you're at ON THE PLATFORM! When you max out in the gym (aka. not following your program) that pretty much screws your training for the rest of the week, maybe even a couple weeks.

Paul also points out that lifting heavy takes a huge toll on the body. If you can get in a similar stimulus with a lighter load, then take advantage of that. This will allow longevity in the sport.

Episode 4: Andy Huang

Andy used to do bodybuilding. He trade that in for powerlifting. Although, he still does "powerbuilding."

He starts off with his main movements and then goes into bodybuilder style accessories.

In his off season he gets away from his competition lifts. For example, SSB Squats and Front Squats. For deads, he likes to do Stiff Leg and RDL's.

He also talks about how people need to JUST TRAIN!

Put in the work! Build up you muscle, work capacity, strength. You have to be mentally tough and discipline!

Andy STRONGLY believes that you should have more muscle! (pun intended)

Powerlifting doesn't mean you have to be a fatty and eat like an asshole.

Episode 5: Julia Ladewski

Julia is one of my favorite ladies! Total woman crush!!! She talks about her journey in the fitness industry!

I'm just going to saw go listen to the episode and follow her on social media!

She has been in the sport for such a long time. Geared lifting and now raw.

She is very open-minded when it comes to training, but she also agrees that if you find something that works for you... THEN STICK WITH THAT! Program jumping isn't going to get you the results you want. It's one thing if you give a program all you've got, and it just doesn't work for you... But if you don't give it time and actually try... Then nothing is going to work.

Key point to take away: BE PATIENT!

Episode 6: Casey Williams

Casey and Tony talk about how you cannot be at your best/strongest all the time. You have to take time away from heavy weights. That is how you get injured.

Quote from Casey: "There is no unrealistic goal, just unrealistic timing."

Due to his battle with ulcerative colitis, Casey has learned to pay attention to the body. And realized really fast how important health is. Sure, an sport to the extreme isn't the healthiest... But you definitely can do your best to be as healthy as you can.

Casey goes over a little bit of his training. It is always so interesting hearing how others train.

Episode 7: Desiree Morgan

Des is a jack of all trades! She has done just about everything. Olympic Lifting, Powerlifting, Figure, Highland Games, and Strongman. She truly is amazing!

She goes over her training for a strongman competition she was prepping for.

Des has definitely had some awesome coaches and mentors (in both powerlifting and strongman).

Tony and Des talk about how being in a good gym with good people will bring you more success than just having the best equipment! This little point hits home for me... Ever since I started powerlifting, I have trained at quite a few different gyms. But my all time favorite is when I'm with a good group of people. Everyone is cheering each other on, pushing you to do your best. It is the best!!!

She is also a coach for TM Nutrition (going to be Team Phoenix Performance soon). As well as a USPA coach. So if you are looking for a strength coach or want to become USPA certified, make sure you email her! Desiree@tmnutrition.net

Words of wisdom: Don't go too heavy too soon. Take the time to learn and grow.

Episode 8: Dave Osborn

Dave is working on his Educational Doctorate in leadership with a focus on health and human performance. THIS IS SO AWESOME! He simply wants to help others! He said he didn't really have a mentor, so he wants to be there to mentor others when it comes to powerlifting/strength training.

Tony and Dave talk about how you how to approach meet day. You have to simply do your best FOR THAT DAY! Try to avoid chasing numbers... That can leave you disappointed at the end of the day.

Dave does his best to live and lead by example (it is what he went to school for). SO COOL!

Getting to know your clients will help you be a better coach for them. Learn what works for each individual person.

He also has his own gym in Wenatchee, Wa. Dave wanted to build a great strength community that he never had. He is building a good team and training environment!

Episode 9: Trevor Jaffe

Trevor is one of Tony's friends from Florida. He is also an amazing coach.

He is the coach of quite a few All-Time World Record Holders!

Trevor talks about how powerlifting and strongman has allowed him open up and express himself. He was/is more introverted... But this has allowed him to meet and talk to more people all over the world.

Tony and Trevor touch on how amazing the camaraderie is in powerlifting! Honestly, after competing at the US Open last year (2017)... I almost didn't want to do bodybuilding. I just loved the environment so much! (plus I wanted to get stronger)

Trevor also talks about being positive when it comes to training and coaching. Don't break your clients down.. BUILD THEM UP! Focus on improving. Don't focus on what you're doing wrong.

You don't want to fail in the gym. You test your strength at meets!

You also want to go into your meet feeling confident!

If you want to be the best... You have to have long term goals. This journey is more than just a 12 week prep.

Episode 10: Rudy Inaba

Rudy Inaba on to discuss supplements, steroids, and health support. Rudy is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to this stuff with a Graduate Degree from UNLV and working for Cenegenics as the Director of Nutrition and Exercise.

This episode was beyond my level of knowledge... It is something I will have to listen to again the more I learn about supplements and health support. But if it is something you are in to... Definitely give it a listen.
